Overland Mail Baghdad-Haifa 1923-1948
Rainer Fuchs
The exhibit shows Overland Mail Baghdad-Haifa as it was called, the Postal Route through the Syro-lraqi Great Desert, which started on 30 August 1923 and ended on 14 May 1948 with the formation of the state of Israel, followed by a boycott of Israel by Arab Countries.
The significance of using this route was that transport time for mail to/from Europe was reduced to approximately 10 days compared to the 30 days required on the usual route by ship from Port Said, through the Suez Canal, around the Arab Peninsula to the Iraq port city of Basrah and by rail to Baghdad.
